Early Detection for a Better Tomorrow
What is the OAE Test?
OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) is a painless, non-invasive test used to check a baby’s hearing, right from birth. It detects soft sounds naturally generated by the inner ear (cochlea) when it responds to auditory stimulation. These sounds help us understand if the ear is working properly—especially the outer hair cells that play a critical role in hearing.
Why is the OAE Hearing Test Important?

Hearing is essential for speech, language, and brain development—especially in the first 6 months of life. Many children with hearing loss appear normal at birth, making early testing essential.
A child’s vocabulary at age 3 can differ dramatically depending on when hearing loss is identified:
- Detected at birth: 300–700 words
- Detected at 6 months: 150–300 words
- Detected at 2 years: 0–50 words

When Should the Test Be Done
According to the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP):
- All newborns should be screened before 1 month of age
- A second screening is recommended at the 6-week immunization visit if the first result is unclear
- High-risk infants (e.g. NICU babies) should undergo both OAE and BERA (ABR) tests

Who Needs an OAE Test?
While OAE is ideal for every baby, it is especially important if:

There is a family history of hearing loss

The baby had a NICU stay, jaundice, or infections

The baby received ototoxic medications

There are craniofacial anomalies or syndromic features
How is the OAE Test Performed?

The process is simple and takes just a few minutes:
- A soft-tipped probe is gently placed in the baby’s ear
- Soft clicking sounds are played
- The probe detects the ear’s response
- The results are analyzed by a trained professional
⏱ Test time: 30 seconds to 5 minutes
😴 Ideal when the baby is calm or asleep
🧘 Completelysafe, quick, and comfortable
What Do the Results Mean?
- Pass: Likely normal hearing
- Refer: The baby may need a second OAE or a BERA test
- Common reasons for a “refer” result include wax, fluid in the ear, or movement during testing—not always hearing loss
